Memorial Events for John Bates

I am often reminded of the two people close to me that have died—my friend and grandfather—while walking around in nature. My friend was filled with love for the natural world, even requesting that I send her photos of the trees that dotted the street outside my dorm when we went off to separate colleges. I grew up adjacent to my grandpa in rural Wisconsin, with a forest in between our houses that my grandpa and dad planted by hand. To think that their hands have touched all those trees and saw to their growth makes me quite emotional.

Mouse Mess, which she authored, won the Zena Sutherland Award for the best picture book of 1998. Her work has been featured in Art Institute of Chicago catalogues. Some basic help and starters when you have to write a tribute to someone you love.

I felt that this series was born out of the loss of control that came with this sudden change in my life. About the Founder, Linnea Asplind RileyLinnea designed her Linnea Poster Calendar from 1986 to 2009. Linnea Riley’s personal graphic style utilized rich colors to produce whimsical and intriguing images. She created with a variety of media including cut and painted paper, colored pencils and pastels.

They house the spirits of those I have lost, and going forward it is something that I will endlessly search for. About the Artist, Johanna RileyJohanna began designing in 1998 for Linnea Design. Her creations include the Linnea Calendars, luggage tags, holiday cards, art prints, posters, tote bags, stickers and private label products for a variety of industries.

John Delos Bates

We continue to print our greeting cards and holiday cards in Seattle, WA with soy-based ink. To offer your sympathy during this difficult time, you can now have memorial trees planted in a National Forest in memory of your loved one. We were founded in 1986 by Linnea Asplind Riley and now run by her daughter, artist Johanna Riley. Linnea Design is a leader in the world of upscale, functional art products. Since 1986, our Poster Calendars have been a family gift tradition that now spans several generations. We'll help you find the right words to comfort your family member or loved one during this difficult time.

Either size will fit perfectly into a photo frame, of which you can hang on the wall or set on your desktop. These calendars make wonderful gifts and are a great tradition for the home or office that last the whole year long. We are excited once again to offer sets of cards full of original artwork by Johanna Riley and a retrospective set of Linnea Riley’s artwork too. Greeting cards and Holiday cards from Linnea Design are always certain to make someone feel very special indeed. His devotion to Judi and their family together was very special.

Will be dedicated in honor of your loved one on the day of your choosing. Hey, I'm Linnea—a minneapolis creative—passionate about design, art, photography, and human connection! I am especially interested in branding, packaging,  and typography projects. Studio Eleven Papers prints cards locally in Seattle, Washington with soy-based inks on premium FSC-certified and recycled papers. Looking For You, Always is an exploration of the way that grief has affected me. In April of 2022, a close friend of mine died, forcing me to face the difficult reality that I would never see her again.

I have memories of my grandpa pointing at trees and identifying what type they were, sometimes remarking that they were diseased or needed a trim. I know he’d be able to look at these photos and tell me exactly what trees they were. I never took the time to learn the names of trees like he and my friend had, but I am reminded of them when I look at trees, seeing their life continue through them. For that reason, it felt right to honor them using trees as the subject of this series.

home renovation design

Projects such as tiling, electrical, and plumbing might require a skilled contractor, adding to the total cost. If you consider expanding or reconfiguring the space, the project might set you back between $5,000 and $25,000+. It often includes new paint, updated flooring, and sometimes minor structural changes to improve the home's flow. Any issues with your home's foundation must be addressed before renovations can proceed. Foundation repair is a significant project that ranges from underpinning to replacing a part of the slab, depending on the issue and structure.

Remember that tackling projects without existing know-how can be more costly in the end, as you might have to hire a professional to fix your mistakes. Ensuring efficient heating is essential for maintaining comfort and energy savings in your home. Furnace or heat pump installations can vary in cost depending on the system type, size, and energy efficiency rating. On average, you can spend between $3,000 and $7,000 for a new furnace or heat pump installation.

Even if you're happy with your home, invariably there will be an area that you feel needs a little more love. That kitchen island you ambitiously installed is never used anymore. Or every time you walk past that imposing brick fireplace, it is always so there.

We asked expert interior designers to shed some light on emerging sustainable home design and renovation trends—it’s safe to say these techniques are as chic as they are environmentally friendly. The furniture and decor in your designs are available to shop directly through Modsy. As part of your project you’ll receive a list of all of the materials, fixtures, finishes, and equipment in your designs to make it easier for you to source the items not available to purchase through Modsy. A gut renovation involves stripping a space down to its bare bones and rebuilding it from scratch. It often involves extensive structural changes and updates to plumbing, electrical, and HVAC systems. The cost of a gut renovation varies significantly depending on the size and condition of the space and the desired level of finishes and amenities.

Compare the scope of a contractor’s completed project to the scope of yours. When managing a renovation, whether it’s for a whole house or just a room, the best way to stay organized is with a home renovation checklist. Following a process and giving each step its due diligence is what helps a home renovation come in as close to your budget and on time as possible. We spoke to home renovation experts to get their top tips on planning, coordinating, and executing a renovation worth celebrating.

However, leaving it as a garage and updating it is typically less expensive. Depending on the scope of the project, you should budget between $3,000 and $30,000 for a garage renovation. Bathroom renovations are consistently expensive due to their small but complex design.

If a homeowner begins the process with a fully developed set of plans that encompass the entire project and outlines the engineering involved, they can possibly save up to six months on the front end. “We find it is best to land on every single item in your renovation — the faucet, tile, countertop, cabinets, appliances, everything — all at once before placing a single order,” explains Gage. Picking the items you want allows you to factor them into your design plan.

Both easy and intuitive, HomeByMe allows you to create your floor plans in 2D and furnish your home in 3D, while expressing your decoration style. We will match you with one of our qualified, expert designers depending on your project size and their availability. All of our renovation designers have years of prior renovation experience from concept to installation before working for Modsy. If you are a returning Renovation Design customer, we will pair you with the same designer whenever possible. But it isn’t just the newness that makes a kitchen remodel so rejuvenating—it’s all the little details that you can cater to your own tastes and preferences.

Some faculty, administrators and parents of students questioned why the selection process did not include vetting of social media. Six days later, on April 15, USC announced that Tabassum would no longer appear on the commencement stage, citing security concerns. The university has not provided more details about the nature of the threats, and the LAPD said it had not received reports of threats to Tabassum or the commencement. Even at a time when swelling demonstrations have engulfed campuses across the nation, USC stands out. No other university has pulled its main commencement, and few have seen as many arrests as quickly as USC.

Pro-Israel groups quickly seized on Tabassum’s selection, accusing the university of caving to antisemitism. After tensions led USC to drop its valedictorian and keynote speaker from its main commencement ceremony, the school canceled its largest graduation event. The crowning of Asna Tabassum as USC valedictorian was supposed to be a time of pride for a university that has tried to shed its old image as a playground for the privileged by bolstering academics and diversity. The Three Keys list is rounded out with various hotels in New York City. The majority of the best hotels in the United States are in California, according to the Michelin Guide.

After an earlier call with a member of the Advisory Committee on Muslim Life, she wrote back to the resigned members, saying she hoped they’d reconsider but respected their decision, the members said this week at a news conference. The same day, she called the campus Chabad rabbi, Dov Wagner, offering her support for the Jewish community, the rabbi said in an interview. In an interview with student media, a Jewish student organizer spoke of responding to “hate with peace,” referencing feelings among some Jewish students that the protests, which included “intifada” chants, were antisemitic. Across the country, pro-Palestinian activists at colleges and universities were mounting encampments, modeled after one at Columbia University. More than 50 tents went up at UC Berkeley, while Cal Poly Humboldt closed its campus after pro-Palestinian activists barricaded themselves in university buildings.

We were the first commercial manufacturer to be fully CARB compliant (two full years before it was mandated by law). We use eco-friendly materials with FSC certification as well as reduce water and waste in manufacturing processes. We distribute products throughout the world direct from our factories in Asia. Central to our success has been our emphasis on good relationships and exceptional service, as well as products of quality and value.

Fairmont Kea Lani's transformation touched every one of its 413 one-bedroom suites and 37 two-story villas, each a contemporary sanctuary infused with island soul. Breathing life into the interiors is a palette of calming cyan blues against bursts of pink, complemented by thoughtfully placed pieces of culturally inspired art that bridge the gap between Hawaiian heritage and modern living. All suites embrace the outdoors with a private lānai that frames the breathtaking views like a living postcard, while bathrooms double as personal spas, equipped with walk-in stone showers and soaking tubs designed for those long, contemplative soaks. For those seeking a generous dose of residential comforts, the resort's two-story oceanfront villas deliver with gusto thanks to fully equipped kitchens, common areas for lounging, and in-villa washers and dryers.

George decided he wanted to establish a business where he could be more autonomous and control his own destiny. By Saturday afternoon, about 15 tents had reemerged in Founders Park, along with a few dozen student protesters. Nearby in Alumni Park, the site of the earlier arrests, graduating students posed for photos in cardinal-red-and-gold USC sashes. They staged a die-in at Founders Park, next to the Bovard administration building that houses Folt’s office. They want the divestment from ties to a genocide,” he said — a reference to investments in weapons companies with ties to the war in Gaza. The events also tore at precarious bridges built between Muslims and the administration after student complaints in recent years of anti-Muslim bias on campus.

Start your mornings cutting through the dawn on a traditional Hawaiian outrigger canoe, led by the resort's expert navigator, blending tradition with adrenaline. And the thrill extends beyond the beach—stand-up paddleboarding, torch lighting, and yoga classes right on the water turn each day into a choose-your-own-adventure story. Snorkel in a wonderland of marine life, trek for whale sightings, or soak up the sun on Polo Beach's flawless sands. Today, Fairmont Designs has grown into a multinational enterprise; producing and distributing a wide range of contract furnishings known for craftmanship, quality and value.

They combine style with sturdy construction and beautiful finishes that match with the dcor of any home. Fairmount Designs furniture collections cuddle various design themes, from traditional to contemporary and classy to casual. Their expert design and global marketing expertise ensure you to get the best furniture pieces for your home.

Exploring Design Heuristics in Software Engineering

design heuristics

To conduct a heuristic evaluation in UI, select a set of heuristics or guidelines like Jakob Nielsen’s 10 usability heuristics. Next, assemble a group of usability experts and assign them to evaluate the interface independently, identifying issues that violate the chosen heuristics. Compile the found issues, prioritize them based on severity, and generate a report detailing the problems and suggested improvements. This article, How to Conduct a Heuristic Evaluation, provides a comprehensive guide on effectively performing heuristic evaluations in UI design.

The Match Between The System And The Real World

Thus, Hypothesis 2 is supported for creativity of concepts, but not for diversity of concept sets. Industrial designers are trained through repeated experience in generating design concepts, with instruction through critique sessions led by instructors or professional designers (Barrett Reference Barrett2000; Uluoglu Reference Uluoglu2000). Industrial design intersects several disciplines, including engineering, ergonomics, business, aesthetics, and social, environmental, and cultural issues (Tovey Reference Tovey1997). For example, form selection in industrial design is driven by aesthetic, creative, and emotional values in addition to functional considerations (Gotzsch Reference Gotzsch, Jerrard and Newport1999). However, despite an emphasis on creative explorations, industrial designers have been shown to experience limitations when attempting to generate diverse concepts (Bruseberg & McDonagh-Philp Reference Bruseberg and McDonagh-Philp2002). The process sees UX designers directly assessing the usability of the product against a predefined list of criteria, known as heuristics.

How to conduct a heuristic evaluation

The first of the Nielsen Norman Group’s ten heuristics is about clear communication between the system and the user. The user should be informed by the design of the system’s current status, receive proper feedback in a timely manner, and be able to expect predictable interactions. In this article, we’re going to be giving you all the information you need on the subject before running you through how to conduct your own heuristic evaluation successfully. Mistakes are often caused by a user’s incorrect mental model of how the system works.

You can learn about the primary navigational features, go to the top of the page to search for other help options, or navigate to new topics in the tree menu along the left side of the screen. If you’re just getting started, you might click on the grid icon and the click to create a frame. If you’ve used the program for a while, you might just tap “F” on your keyboard to accomplish the same thing. When you first join the platform, you’re given a brief tour that introduces you to the key features and function of the platform.

Asana does a great job of providing help tips that are relevant, easy to access, and even easier to understand. A quick scan of the homepage (post-login), and it’s easy to spot the question mark icon. App onboarding pages or walkthroughs, chatbots, popovers, tooltips, videos, and more. These are all means of providing guidance to your users if they hit some kind of block in completing whatever they’ve come to your product for. The design is much more minimalist, with clearer emphasis placed on the few things that GoDaddy really wants visitors to see and act on. If you’d like to really go back in time, have a look at WaybackMachine’s calendar of GoDaddy updates (or try it for any site you’re curious about).

This demand arises from continual changes in the market, new technologies, new legislation, and sustainability concerns (Basadur & Finkbeiner Reference Basadur and Finkbeiner1985). The result of design activity is often expected to be original, adding value to the base of existing designs by solving technical problems in new ways. Studies of designers in both domains may lead to a more informed understanding of how ideation can be facilitated, and of building expertise in design (Cross Reference Cross, Cross and Edmonds2003).

Mobile Augmented Reality Design Evaluation

As a novel product, designers appeared to make use of knowledge of related cookware and basic features of heat production from sunlight. The designers seem to be able to successfully generate concepts despite the relatively short amount of time provided. The concepts generated addressed a wide range of solutions for the solar cooker problem. Verbal data from the experimental sessions were transcribed to supplement the visual sketching data.

Instead of attaching multiple components to achieve one function as in the engineer’s concept, the industrial designer assigned additional functions to those components. From these categories, it is clear that a variety of concepts were generated across the 24 designer protocols. The concepts included a diverse sample of materials, methods, and features for the solar cooker.

However, as a sample of the thinking that takes place when initially considering a new design problem, the session length was sufficient to allow the emergence of some evidence about the initial stage of design. Most people do not read the textual content presented in digital spaces, rather they scan for the information they need. That is to say, they inherently seek to be energy-efficient and choose the shortest route to reach their goal.

Instead, there are general guidelines, principles, or rules of thumb that you use to inform and evaluate your work. These guidelines are called heuristics, and when you evaluate your (or your competitor’s) work against these heuristics, it is called heuristic evaluation. Heuristic evaluation is vital as it efficiently identifies usability problems in the design phase of product development, saving time and resources. Employing experts to review products against usability principles helps enhance user satisfaction and interaction and ensures a product's design is intuitive and user-friendly.

Not only should you look at, and in many ways cooperate with, the ways in which your users’ other digital experiences work, but you should also find ways to link their experience of your product to their non-digital realities. A heuristic evaluation assesses a product experience in which multiple evaluators (e.g., designers and researchers) review a UI or product experience and record how it violates the established heuristics. Explore all the possibilities of design heuristics in software engineering and more by enrolling in The Institute of Data’s comprehensive Software Engineering program. With the advent of AI and the growing prominence of agile methodologies, design heuristics are evolving to meet the demands of the ever-changing software engineering landscape. Without design heuristics in software engineering, they might be overwhelmed by the sheer number of design choices and trade-offs involved.

In my experience, it’s easy to forget about the heuristics unless they’re embedded in the workflow. When you use a new interface, you’ll spend some time to get used to the copy and UI elements. First-time users will have to expend cognitive resources to map the interface with their established mental models. DesignOps is a set of best practices and principles that aims to streamline the effectiveness of design teams.

Perhaps they are a person who identifies as a gender that’s different from the one tied to their sex assigned at birth. Perhaps there are simply aspects of their life, identity, or experience that sets them outside of the statistical majority of the expected users for your product. If you’re designing a product that doesn’t already have these mental models to rely on, look at the basic functions you need the code to create visual representations of. What are some non-digital metaphors you would use to explain that function to someone new to your product?

Look at apps like Apple Pages or G-Drive apps; when you’re writing a document, you see just a few controllers related to text editing. But when you decide to add an extra chart, a whole new palette of features specifically curated to help you complete this task appears. An extreme example is a skeuomorphism design, which transfers all details of real world objects into the software. At the beginning of smartphone adoption, it helped people to learn how to use their new companions through the aesthetics and processes they were familiar with before.

Industrial Designer 7 demonstrated an additive approach in heuristic use, showing how heuristics can be used to add increasing elaborations to a design concept to produce variations. Seven similar concepts were generated, but multiple heuristics appear in each, and multiple heuristics to transition between them (see Figure 9). This designer began by attaching two existing components to each other – a magnifying glass and a griddle – to create a surface with focused sunlight. In her second concept, she transformed the magnifying glass to a square magnifying glass attached to the griddle. In the following concept, she made the lens height adjustable, and, in the fourth concept, she added sides to it to maintain the heat more effectively. She then considered portability by adding a rigid handle, which was changed to a flexible handle in Concept 6.

Then, add a tablespoon of dishwashing liquid, and fill the glass the rest of the way with warm water. The flies will fly into the tumbler, but they won’t fly out. If the tiny brown bugs you saw had wings, they probably were fruit flies or fungus gnats. They feed off decaying matter – like rotten fruit – and produce. You will usually find these kinds of flying brown bugs if you have plants or a big garden.

The truth is that your home has a lot to offer these pesky small brown bugs. It’s a haven filled with all the things they need to survive. As their name would suggest, silverfish have a silvery sheen on the top of the body. It reflects light like fish scales, making the bugs easy to spot with a flashlight.

Some fleas are microscopic bugs that can be as small as 0.04” (0.1 mm). However, some flea species can be as “large” as 0.13” (0.3 mm). The symptoms of flea bites—itchy red marks—are usually the only way to identify a problem with these brown biting bugs. To identify tiny brown bugs use a microscope to examine their identifying characteristics.

Cockroaches are notorious pests that start out small.

Below you'll find a few of the most popular plants to deter bugs from your home and kitchen. Bugs love kitchens and it's normal to find a line of ants on the counter or a stray cockroach scurrying across the floor in search of snacks. But just because kitchen bugs are common, doesn't mean they're any fun to deal with. Exterminators are expensive and bug sprays are often laced with harmful chemicals that are worse for you than a few creepy crawlers.

Proactive pest management begins with identifying the pest and using information on the biology of the offending creature to decide upon a plan of action. We've identified 10 tiny bugs you might be seeing in your home and how to get rid of them. You might only notice a tick when it’s half-buried into the skin and looks rounded, red, and gorged. However, it’s vital to identify ticks after you or your pet have been outdoors to reduce the risk of disease. The best way to eradicate fruit flies from your kitchen is to remove all food from countertops.

Step 3: Pest characteristics’ comparison

They also emit a characteristic offensive odor, especially when squashed. Junk bugs are weird brown bugs with triangular bodies, yellow markings, and brown heads. The brown bug-like larvae have horn-like mouth-parts that they use to kill prey. However, their sharp jaws can also inflict a nasty bite, cause skin redness and swelling.

When alone, they can grow and will eat food, furniture, and other items. Once you learn what they look like, they will be hard to miss. When you see silverfish, it is because of moisture in the area. It’s best to get rid of them and throw out any infested food. For example, you may notice an increase in these pests during warmer months or when there are fluctuations in humidity levels.

To kill carpet beetles, you can wash infected fabrics at hot temperatures or dry clean them. Using hot steam to clean carpets and upholstery will also kill carpet beetles in all stages—egg, larva, and adult. There are, however, safe and sane ways to get rid of most of these common house bugs. The common housefly is widely considered the greatest threat to the human welfare of any non-biting insect. That is because the housefly is basically everywhere, mates rapidly, and has the ability to transmit disease to people. Known as “silent killers,” termites can work to actively damage your home without you even knowing you are infested.

Size and Shape

Water bugs such as the Giant water bug have a defined brown color. But when they do, they risk transmitting the Chagas disease. You can prevent stink bugs on fruits in your garden by spraying the fruit with soap and water before the season of stink bugs begin. Cellar spiders are an example of light brown spiders commonly found in basements. Bat bugs can bite and they bite humans they come in contact with for blood. However, they need bats to survive which means they never reproduce once separated from their bat host.

Because most people refer to disgusting creeping and flying pests as bugs, this article will refer to all pesky brown insects as bugs. These moths with bicolored wings are nocturnal and attracted to lights. Indianmeal moths will infest stored food products like flour, grains, and nuts. You may see a few of these tiny brown bugs wandering your home from time to time. The dreaded bed bugs (many people’s worst nightmare) are tiny (1.5mm-6.5mm), flat insects that feed on human blood.

Like other types of aphids, whiteflies also spread plant diseases. Weevils range in color depending on the species—from red to dull brown, beige, green, or red. Therefore, spotting one of these grayish rounded bugs in the house means there may be a large infestation. Moisture and dampness are the main things that attract pillbugs—also called sowbugs, slaters, roly-polies, and doodlebugs. Fleas are most commonly found in areas where pets rest and sleep, as these parasites are often brought into the home by dogs and cats.

So, make sure to clean your areas well and get rid of elements that attract these pests to your place. Stinkbugs are pests that prefer to dwell within your walls, crawl space, or attic during winter. They possess solid green color with a yellow-orange rim around their scutellum. Although some weevil species, like rice weevils, can be seen in kitchen areas due to the foods they can get there, such as cereals, beans, and nuts. As the name suggests, silverfish typically appear silver in color due to the shimmery quality of their skin.
